Selon le site ChartsInFrance, le « Time Magazine » a effectué une sélection des 100 meilleures chansons, classées par décennies. Quelques critères ont été donnés pour éviter d’avoir une liste trop exhaustive. Il n’était donc pas possible d’une part de mettre deux fois le même chanteur, et d’autre part, le choix se réduisait aux artistes qui chantaient en anglais. Le magazine est ainsi remonté jusqu’en 1923 pour s’adonner à cette tâche.
